Learners as content and task providers

Relevance and interest are crucial to selecting teaching materials, especially with teenage learners. Finding materials that incorporate both aspects can be time-consuming. So how can we achieve this? By offering our learners opportunities to be both content and task providers. In this presentation, I will look into ways at how this approach works in practice and how it can spur learner creativity and sense of self-worth.

Educational games in action

This presentation will focus on versatile games inspired mostly by radio and TV shows and adapted for classroom use. Games like “Charades”, “Pictionary”, “Word Sneak”, “Box of lies”, “In the Manner of the Adverb” and “Scattergories”, intrigue students and add to their learning experiences. You will be demonstrated how such games are custom designed and carried out to create a fun classroom environment and invite students’ spontaneity and improvisation. Games of this sort are tailored around particular lexical categories, trigger the brain to recall information from its knowledge pool and generate creative and spontaneous use of language. These games promote meaningful communication, involve interpersonal intelligence and engage bodily, kinesthetic, visual and spatial intelligences. In short, students are offered new experiences which are not provided in a typical lesson and we teachers get to enrich our teaching practive.

Get ready for the winter! Blended learning and how to integrate it into your teaching

A few months ago, most of us had to shift, practically overnight, to online teaching. In most cases, students and parents overlooked errors, omissions and glitches, and praised your emergency teaching under unforeseen circumstances such as a pandemic. But this winter, their expectations are much higher! Can you combine traditional face-to-face teaching and online teaching seamlessly?

What can language teachers learn from museum educators about activating the creative and generative power of images?

The goal of the talk is to familiarize language teachers with the mindset, but also key tools and practices used by the viewing specialists in museums. In this new multimodal communicative landscape, and as we are starting to introduce visual literacy tasks in the language classroom, language teachers do not need to reinvent the wheel, we just need to learn from the viewing specialists.

What’s in a lesson plan? The importance of pre- and post- activities in every in EFL lesson.

Vassiliki Lismani, Teacher, Teacher Trainer
Lesson planning has been considered a fundamental element of teaching serving practical reasons and being a sign of professionalism and commitment. Every effective lesson should be structured as a threefold process, namely pre- / while- / post- stage,   with well-structured and targeted activities integrated in each part. However, in practice, while – activities get the lion’s share not only because this stage is the longest in every lesson but most importantly because teachers do not always acknowledge the importance of the other two stages. In this presentation, we will discuss why pre- and post- stages are necessary in every lesson and suggest some activities for these stages to enhance and support learning.

Blended learning can facilitate a smooth transition from on-site to online learning and make the most of the resources that students have already used during the lockdown. In this hands-on workshop, we will focus on how to select the model of blended which can accommodate your learner needs; which tools you can use; how you can design your syllabus to ensure that your students can reap benefits from  technology  in and outside the classroom, and achieve their learning aims.

Yiannis Kosmopoulos, Special Needs Educator, Teacher Trainer
