Teaching adults: a manageable challenge

Adult learners are a growing part of the student body as English has become the international language and these people might not have had the chance to master the language at an earlier age. These adults range from young adults who wish to get a language certificate or pursue their studies in an English-speaking country to professionals who are faced with the need to learn or improve their English so as to stay competitive within the job market. Whatever the situation, teaching adults can be a pleasant surprise and quite a challenge at the same time. Within this framework, this presentation aims at putting forth the reasons why an adult can be highly motivated, more mature and therefore a better learner. It will also present some ways in which a teacher can approach teaching adults so as to better serve the particular needs and abilities of these students. What is hoped for is for English language teachers to realize that teaching adults can actually be quite fulfilling.
